The National Platform of Self Advocates in partnership with the Centre for Disability Law at NUIG will launch their research report on the lived experiences of People with Disabilities of housing and transport on Monday January 23, 2017 in the Academy Plaza Hotel, Dublin.

The report will be launched by Mr. Finian McGrath T.D. Minister of State at the Departments of Social Protection, Justice & Equality and Health with special responsibility for Disability Issues.

The Platform is an independent self-advocacy organisation. It was set up to make sure that the voices of people with intellectual disabilities are heard.

The research report highlights the experiences of people with disabilities of housing and transport.  The research involved the National Platform of Self Advocates with the support of NUIG in gathering lived experiences of people as far apart as Kerry, Galway, Limerick and Dublin.  The research was funded by the Irish Research Council.

Brian Hayes, Chairperson of the National Platform of Self Advocates says that the research outcomes show some of the real challenges faced by People with Disabilities in accessing housing and transport that fits their needs and lives:

“The stories shared by people shows that the rights of people with disabilities still have a long way to go and that government, local government and other agencies have to listen to our needs.”
